How we can help employers gain a hiring edge

It’s a difficult time to add staff. Unemployment is at an all-time low — 3.7% — and only 134,000 new jobs were added last month. But job openings are at an all-time high of 6.9M jobs that need to be filled. This means employers need help, now more than ever, in staffing their hard to fill roles.

According to the latest report, the 134,000 new jobs created are in these sectors:

  • Healthcare (29.8K jobs)
  • Construction (23K)
  • Manufacturing (18K)
  • Government (13K)
  • Financial (13K)

Despite the challenging environment, there are concrete actions employers should take to increase their response rate to postings.

What employers need to do

  • Adjust expectations accordingly. Low unemployment means fewer people are actively looking. But, people are looking. There were 5.5M job separations last month alone, so people are switching jobs. It may just take longer for employers to find these candidates.
  • Spend more on advertising. Employers may need to advertise for 60 days instead of 30 days for example, or cast a wider net by increasing their programmatic budget to either spend more per click or to extend the life of their jobs.
  • Widen your criteria. Does the role really require a college degree and does a past DUI history, for example, completely rule out candidates?
  • Be descriptive in your postings. Talk about what your company does and make sure to enter a salary or salary ranges. Unemployment is low, but wages have not gone up accordingly. A good wage may be what convinces someone to switch jobs. If you pay well, let people know.
  • Focus on your brand. Do you have a good company culture, good benefits and flexibility? Does your company make a great product or offer a great service? Are you a “green” employer supporting environmental causes? Showcase this in your job postings and on your career pages.

How we can help

  • Passive candidates. In addition to postings, we can help employers target passive candidates on Facebook. This gives the employer’s brand more visibility.
  • Target niche audiences. Through Recruitology, employers can target jobs not only locally, but to targeted niche networks that reach regionally and beyond.
  • Career Pages. Ask about career pages, where employers can showcase jobs and also add a description about their organization, the products and services offered, company culture, and benefits. Career Pages also embed any existing videos or images the employer may want to feature.
